The New Audi Q8- Is It Worth The Hype?

Audi Q8 interiorThe Germans newest addition to the SUV market is the overtly large Audi Q8. Powered by a Turbo V-6 putting out 335 horsepower at the lowest trim, it weighs in at a hefty 2.5 tons. Now while that may be cutting it close for most residential neighborhoods, rest assured this car is not for the average consumer. Starting at $67,000, it is the most expensive SUV available in Audi’s lineup. With its aggressive styling, German roots, and updated tech, one might think it to be an automatic home run. I went to test drive one for myself to see if it would live up to all the hype.

Underwhelming Drive

While Audi is obviously world renowned for their ride comfort, the Q8’s suspension made me feel disconnected from the road. It felt similar to the ride of a Toyota Highlander, available at more than half the starting cost of the Q8. Acceleration felt heavy and did not feel as powerful as the rest of the Audi lineup. It would benefit tremendously from a trim in weight by about 200-300 pounds, and a boost by 100 horsepower.

One step forward, two steps backAudi Q8 Exterior

Audi’s new technology package includes a 2 screen setup for normal driving functions in the center stack, as well as Audi’s own Virtual Cockpit. While I must admit I love the virtual cockpit feature set, the center stack screens leave me feeling like Audi took a step backward. Gone are the trackpads, and button immediately in front of the armrest, replaced with touchscreen functionality. I found it to be hard to use, as using a touchscreen accurately in a moving vehicle is nearly impossible.

Fit and Finish to Die For

Unsurprisingly, the one thing Audi performs masterfully is interior finish, and the Audi Q8 is no different. With a soft touch leather steering wheel, I truly didn’t want to let go. Small features are going to make this the choice for a daily commute, like the Bang & Olufsen speakers, heated and cooled seats, panoramic sunroof, and more.

The Audi Q8 is the car that nobody asked for, yet Audi delivered. Its first iteration is undoubtedly shaky, but what car model became an immediate success overnight? If the Audi Q8 trimmed off some weight, gained more power, and fixed the touch screen inaccuracy, I just might consider it for my next lease. That is until I get a chance to see the SQ8 slated for next year.
